2010 here we come!

Friday, January 1st, 2010

2009 was a big year! It was an awesome year for many people I know personally, and it seemed like politically and financially the whole country was biting the big one.

A milestone you may have missed in comics was a former GAMmer, Erika Moen, ended her personal and quirky journal Comic called DAR: A Super Girly Top Secret Comic Diary. The comic began in 2003 and was included in one of Girlamatic’s original line-ups. We’ve been cheering on Erika ever since her departure from GAM toward her journey becoming a freelance artist! We’d like to give a shout out to Erika on this awesome 2009 milestone, and wish her a fabulously happy and exciting 2010!

Also in 2009, we announced the return of Chasing Rainbows by the enigmatic Svetlana Chmakova (Dramacon and Night School)! We’re immensely excited to have Svet back on one of our most anticipated series!
The start date will be announced soon! Stay Tuned!

If you haven’t yet heard our December podcast please check it out!

2010 Will hold a lot of new adventures for Girlamatic as a magazine, as well as publisher. 2010 Will see the first Girlamatic print magazine collection with your favorite comics to hold in your hand! Plus much much more by new and old GAM creators alike!

We’ll also be starting a Ustream and You Tube channel and we’ll be welcoming submissions in all media very soon for that!

Girlamatic of 2010 will also get a new coat of paint and some better features! Hold on to your hats folks :)

See you soon!

Show and Tell Time

Monday, November 9th, 2009

It’s been a while, but I’m back and it’s show and tell time, people! Here’s how it works: I’m going to talk to you about my new show “Shrouded Mirrors‚” and you – I mean YOU, are going to respond by commenting or emailing about your doll/art/doll art exploits. The most interesting/accomplished/just plain awesome of you will be featured in a future post. So respond, the power is yours!

Ok, I guess I’ll start with the ‚”Hey, cool, look what I can do a bit. As some of you know, I’m an artist, the dime-a-dozen painting-and-drawing type. But there is something that I do that is considered by some in my field as ‚”awesome” ‚”creepy” or ‚”umm…unique‚” As you’ve probably guessed by the tone of this blog, I make dolls.

It started as an exercise in grief after my great aunt died. She had been obsessed with dolls in a really weird way and after she passed I started to make them in rememberance of her. It was hard to do at first. I had to swallow my disgust because previously I had been more than a little creeped out by dolls. (probably because of my great aunt, but that is another story for another time.) Due to being the typical self-hating artist I muscled through the gag reflex and found out that I *gasp* liked making dolls. I found that there were things that I could say through dolls that I couldn’t say in any other media. An obsession was born.

And I have carried that obsession through to this latest show, “Shrouded Mirrors”, my second solo show at the Peacock Room lounge in Orlando Florida. This work is definitely my best to date and I am especially proud of the four crown jewels of the show: my recently completed ball-jointed dolls. The dolls are sculpted from imported stone-clay over a 4 month period and then finished with oil paints and powdered pigments. It took a lot of trial and error, the dolls that you see here are version 2.0, and I really feel happy with the outcome. As well as the dolls themselves, there are a few 2D pieces with doll themes. “She Sleeps with Eyes Open” is a drawing of Snow White as an unsleeping ball-jointed doll in a coffin full of apples. In “The Poetry of Rot” a doll head covered in twigs, poisonous mushrooms and creepy crawlies hurtles across the picture plane. There is also a subtle doll reference in “Jardin d’Hiver”, an oil painting on the theme of immaturity. A doll’s ball-jointed hand offers the main figure a tantalizing piece of forbidden fruit.

I hope that you have enjoyed this short tour of my cobwebed and doll-infested imagination. If you are in the Orlando Florida area, please come see “Shrouded Mirrors” at the Peacock Room. It will be up through Halloween.

I look forward to seeing your personal your offerings to the doll world!

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Wow. So I’ve been a little tentative to mention how our stats have changed since the relaunch. I wanted to wait a whole complete month before celebrating. And well. The response has been overwhelming!

Thanks so much for reading Girlamatic! Our readership has more than doubled since relaunch, and we’re increasing exponentially every month so far. It seems everyone is pretty happy with the layout, if you have any questions or comment on any GAM event or comic, you can always join us in the forum!

I’m so excited about this news. The better we do the more we can do. And we have some HUGE things coming for your guys. We’ve got more new blogs launching, we’ve got a ALL-STAR Comic Creator making her RETURN to Girlamatic! We’ve got GAM-O-WEEN coming up very soon!

It’s almost officially fall, and I’m pumped for all the creators have got going on! Galaxion has started up again! Real Magic, a Galaxion creator mini, has concluded, and Galaxion is back in full swing with a color page!

Shrub Monkeys is AT 100 COMICS! KT is a comic juggernaut. :) CONGRATS on the awesome milestone KT!!

NEW TODAY is also Mad Sugar, Li’l Mell, Five Star, & Compass!

Soon we’ll have podcast number (finally) 2! (Due to some technical difficulties we’re having to switch servers that we host on, and we’ll get it all fixed for ya permanently!) And we’re planning a Halloween podcast, so be sure to send in your suggested topics and questions for GAM creators and operators! Lynn Lau will be graciously hosting for us again!

Happy September, Everyone! Stick around, much bigger things coming to town!

What’s New!

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Hey, Readers! Saturday is off to a great start! I’ve been traveling and Hurricane Bill made it impossible for my to fly into JFK the other night! But that’s okay, because there’s lots of new stuff at Girlamatic to keep up with! (Especially for me!)

If you’re just surfing the net on this rainy day (for the east coast of America, anyway!) then you should check out mangatitlegenerator.com I’ve been having a ball playing with it and laughing at the awesome titles it makes up. I totally want to create some of those Manga.

As for us:
Podcast #2 is going up tomorrow, now being served off our own server! There’s a new Shrub Monkeys today! Along with Claviger, Black Forest, Godseeker, Five Star, Faery Underground, Jeepers, and Li’l Mell!

New Blogs today Hobotaku on Uzumaki, Dollface on Mitsukazu Mihara’s Early Works [pt2], and soon a new installment of Geek Chic!

Have a great Saturday, everyone!
