Safari journal, page 25: torch and sword

The torches were birch and other bark and bits of dry detritus tied around sodden branches. They lit tolerably easily and held their flame for a good while.

I’d have thought that Stefan’s sword would be a langseax, but no. I don’t suppose I am sure why I’d have thought that. But he’s got a very stout double-edged blade, the sort you’d expect a soldier to carry. It is very dinged up but very well loved and maintained. He’d not drawn it yet on the journey, so I’d not gotten a good look at it until then.

In other news, I’ve finally ironed out the last of the wrinkles in the archive, so you should be able to read through without getting stuck, now.

April 27: I began to notice other scents, too, like roast pheasant, bacon, even fresh baked bread. All part of the lure, said Stefan, and if it got to be too much for me, I should fill my nostrils with torch smoke. A sharp command from Stefan called the griffins into single file behind him, while we advanced, waving torches.
